Class Detail

Concrete Bridge Building/Certification

Course Description

This 24 hour certification class will introduce you to the cast-in-place, post-tensioned, concrete box girder bridge – the structure typically specified by the California State Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for most bridges in our state. The class will start with descriptions of the functions and terminology of a variety of box girder bridge components such as; abutments, columns, falsework, soffits, bent caps, hinges, restrainers, diaphragms, elevations, super-elevations and camber. A description of “lost deck” forming procedures and post tensioning is also included. The class also involves the actual “hands-on” construction of a full-scale, box girder bridge mock-up. The project begins with the installation of a “mock” falsework system which will be sheeted over with plywood to create a large working bridge platform. Using the platform as the bridge soffit form, you will layout and erect exterior girder forms, construct a bridge deck overhang form, layout and erect interior girder forms, and build a bridge diaphragm form. The last portion of the class will be spent learning to read and interpret actual Caltrans concrete box girder bridge plans. Working with the Caltrans Standard Plans and Standard Specifications will also be covered.
